5 DAYS BIRDING NYUNGWE
After your breakfast drive to Nyungwe National park in southwestern Rwanda. Nyungwe forest is at present the best in the world to see the thrilling and localized Rockefellers Sunbird, Red –collared Mountain Babbler. Nyungwe forest National park is the prime destination for Albertine Rift endemic birds providing at least 29 of the 44 species. The park also boasts one the highest variety of volume of primates many of which you will see along the birding trails.
After an early breakfast head out for birding in the forest covering birding trails around Gisakura, vist Kamiranzovu swamp which provides chance to see Grauer’s swamp Warbler, Doherty’s Bush –shrike, Many-Coloured-shrike.
Have early breakfast and set out for a full day hike along the Mt.Bigugu which is 2950m above sea-level. the trail is well known for many Albertine Rift endemics and some of those often recorded on this trail include. Red- faced Woodland Warbler, Rwenzori Apalis, Strange weaver, Red-throted Alethe, Archers Robin-chat, Sooty boubu, Handsome-Francolin, yellow-eyed black flycatcher, Rwenzori Turaco, Stripe breasted Tit, Regal sunbird, Blue-headed sunbird.
wake up at 5am to Cuamudongo forest a small tract of forest detached from Nyungwe forest. the forest has a small population of Chimps of which are easier to find. Getting there as early as possible enables you to see them before they wake up, as they harder to track down when already on the move. Spend an hour with the Chimps and return to the lodge for lunch. after lunch you can do some birding along the road and the edge of the forest.
After breakfast head to Uwinka trail canopy walk which offers access to good views of birds that otherwise are not easy to spot from the ground. After the canopy head to Kigali for your drop off.
